The Office of Administrative Law Judges (OALJ) conducts hearings involving a wide variety of matters under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of Labor. Its caseload primarily involves claimants seeking benefits under the Black Lung Benefits Act, the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act and the Defense Base Act—but ALJs also hear and decide cases arising from many other labor-related statutes, Executive Orders, and regulations, OALJ conducts hearings nationwide. It is headquartered in Washington, D.C, and has judges and staff located in eight district offices. OALJ also houses the Board of Alien Labor Certification Appeals (BALCA).
